Langues : Français (fre) Index. décimale : 50 Physics of Gases, Plasmas, and Electric Discharges Résumé : This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the theory of magnetic field line reconnection, now a major subject in plasma physics. The book focuses on the various reconnection mechanisms dominating magnetic processes under the different plasma conditions encountered in astrophysical systems and in laboratory fusion devices. The book consists of two major parts: the first deals with the classical resistive approach, while the second presents an overview of weakly collisional or collisionless plasmas. Applications primarily concern astrophysical phenomena and dynamo theory, with emphasis on the solar and geodynamo, as well as magnetospheric substorms, the most spectacular reconnection events in the magnetospheric plasma. The theoretical procedures and results also apply directly to reconnection processes in laboratory plasmas, in particular the sawtooth phenomenon in tokamaks. The book will be of value to graduate students and researchers interested in magnetic processes both in astrophysical and laboratory plasma physics. 1. Introduction; 2. Basic kinematic concepts; 3. Current sheets; 4. Resistive instabilities; 5. Dynamo theory; 6. Noncollisional reconnection processes; 7. Microscopic theory of magnetic reconnection; 8. Magnetospheric substorms.

ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 0-521-85310-9 Note générale : Hardback
Langues : Français (fre) Index. décimale : 47 Fluid dynamics Résumé : The emergence of observing systems such as acoustically-tracked floats in the deep ocean, and surface drifters navigating by satellite has seen renewed interest in Lagrangian fluid dynamics. Starting from the foundations of elementary kinematics and assuming some familiarity of Eulerian fluid dynamics, this book reviews the classical and new exact solutions of the Lagrangian framework, and then addresses the general solvability of the resulting general equations of motion. A unified account of turbulent diffusion and dispersion is offered, with applications among others to plankton patchiness in the ocean. Written at graduate level, the book provides the first detailed and comprehensive analytical development of the Lagrangian formulation of fluid dynamics, of interest not only to applied mathematicians but also oceanographers, meteorologists, mechanical engineers, astrophysicists and indeed all investigators of the dynamics of fluids. The first book that gives a unified account of Lagrangian fluid dynamics Well-respected and experienced author in the fields of oceanography and mathematics Written at graduate level and can be used as an academic reference for oceanographers, meteorologists, mechanical engineers, astrophysicists or all investigators of the dynamics of fluids Contents Part I. The Lagrangian Formulation: 1. Lagrangian kinematics; 2. Lagrangian statistics; 3. Lagrangian dynamics; 4. Coordinates; 5. Real fluids; Part II. Lagrangian Flows: 6. Some analytical Lagrangian solutions; 7. Waves, instabilities and vortices; 8. Viscous incompressible flow; 9. General solvability; Part III. Diffusion: 10. Absolute dispersion; 11. Relative dispersion; 12. Convective subranges, scalar variance spectrum; 13. Diffusion; Part IV. Lagrangian data: 14. Observing systems; 15. Data analysis: the single particle; 16. This book introduces the basic properties of solitons using examples from macroscopic physics before presenting the main theoretical methods. It then discusses applications from solid state, atomic and biological physics. There is an emphasis throughout on a new approach to modelling nonlinearities using the soliton equations. Based on the authors'graduate course, this textbook gives an instructive view of the physics of solitons for students with a basic knowledge of physics, and classical and quantum mechanics.

Langues : Français (fre) Index. décimale : 70 Condensed Matter: Electronic Structure, Electrical, Magnetic, and Optical Properties Résumé : Nonlinear transport phenomena are an increasingly important aspect of modern semiconductor research. This volume deals with complex nonlinear dynamics, pattern formation, and chaotic behavior in such systems. It bridges the gap between two well-established fields: the theory of dynamic systems and nonlinear charge transport in semiconductors. This unified approach helps reveal important electronic transport instabilities. The initial chapters lay a general framework for the theoretical description of nonlinear self-organized spatio-temporal patterns, such as current filaments, field domains, fronts, and analysis of their stability. Later chapters consider important model systems in detail: impact ionization induced impurity breakdown, Hall instabilities, superlattices, and low-dimensional structures. State-of-the-art results include chaos control, spatio-temporal chaos, multistability, pattern selection, activator-inhibitor kinetics, and global coupling, linking fundamental issues to electronic device applications. This book will be of great value to semiconductor physicists and nonlinear scientists alike.
