Langues : Français (fre) Index. décimale : 47 Fluid dynamics Résumé : Preface; 1. Interfacial fluid dynamics Stephen Davis; 2. Viscous fingering as an archetype for growth patterns Yves Couder; 3. Blood flow in arteries and veins Tim Pedley; 4. Open shear flow instabilities Patrick Huerre; 5. Turbulence Javier Jimenez; 6. Convection in the environment Paul Linden; 7. Reflections on magnetohydrodynamics Keith Moffatt; 8. Solidification of fluids Grae Worster; 9. Geological fluid mechanics Herbert Huppert; 10. The dynamic ocean Chris Garrett; 11. On global-scale atmospheric and oceanic circulations Michael McIntyre; Index. Now available in paperback, this wide-ranging text on modern fluid mechanics research includes sections on modelling the environment, physiology and magnetohydrodynamics. At the same time, the book discusses basic physical phenomena such as turbulence that still present fundamental challenges. Conventional textbooks cannot hope to give graduate students more than an inkling of what topics are currently being researched, or how to make a choice between them. This book aims to rectify matters, at least in part. It consists of eleven chapters that each introduces a different branch of the subject. Though not exhaustive, the coverage is broad: thin-film flows, Saffman-Taylor fingering, flows in arteries and veins, convective and absolute instabilities, turbulence, natural convection, magnetohydrodynamics, solidification, geological fluid mechanics, oceanography and atmospheric dynamics are all introduced and reviewed by established authorities. Thus the book will not only be suitable for graduate-level courses but also for specialists seeking introductions to other areas.

Langues : Français (fre) Index. décimale : 47.55 Multiphase and stratified flows, Drops and bubbles, Thermocapillary effects, Stratified flows, Fluidized beds, liquid sheets Résumé : The theme of this book is an exposition of what we know about the physics underlying the onset of instability in liquid sheets and jets. Wave motion and breakup phenomena subsequent to the onset of instability are also carefully explained. Physical concepts are established through rigorous mathematics, accurate numerical analyses and comparison of theory with experiment. Exercises are provided for students new to the subject, and these help familiarize the reader with the required mathematical tools. This book further provides a rational basis for designing equipment and processes involving the phenomena of sheet and jet breakup. Researchers interested in transition to turbulence, hydrodynamic stability or combustion will find this book a highly useful resource, whether their background lies in engineering, physics, chemistry, biology, medicine or applied mathematics. Contents Notation list; Preface; 1. Introduction; 2. Uniform inviscid liquid sheets; 3. Nonuniform inviscid liquid sheets; 4. Viscous liquid sheets; 5. Waves on liquid sheets; 6. Phenomena of jet breakup; 7. Inviscid jets; 8. A viscous jet; 9. Roles played by interfacial shear; 10. Annular liquid jets; 11. Nonlinear capillary instability of liquid jets and sheets; 12. Epilogue.

Langues : Français (fre) Index. décimale : 47 Fluid dynamics Résumé : Images of fluids in motion have served both scientific and artistic purposes at least since the time of Leonardo de Vinci over 500 years ago. The visualization of fluid flow has played a major role in the development of fluid dynamics and its technological and scientific applications, from the evolution of flight to the tracking of weather to understanding the flow of blood. Today, the Division of Fluid Dynamics of the American Physical Society annually sponsors a competition for outstanding images of fluid flow, judged by their artistic beauty and novelty and their contribution to the better understanding of fluid dynamics. This Gallery is a selection of the images that have won the competition over the last seventeen years. Each image is accompanied by some explanatory text, aimed at making the collection an attractive and essential work for everyone interested in the art and science of fluid flow. Contents Introduction; 1. Jets and mixing layers; 2. Vortices; 3. Patterns; 4. Drops and bubbles; 5. Complex fluids; 6. Flows with interfaces; 7. Free surface interaction; 8. Combustion; 9. Langues : Français (fre) Index. décimale : 60 Condensed Matter: Structure, Mechanical and Thermal Properties Résumé : Materials science has emerged as one of the central pillars of the modern physical sciences and engineering, and is now even beginning to claim a role in the biological sciences. A central tenet in the analysis of materials is the structure-property paradigm, which proposes a direct connection between the geometric structures within a material and its properties. The increasing power of high-speed computation has had a major impact on theoretical materials science and has permitted the systematic examination of this connection between structure and properties. In this graduate textbook, Rob Phillips examines the various methods that have been used in the study of crystals, defects and microstructures and that have made such computations possible. A second key theme is the presentation of recent efforts that have been developed to treat problems involving either multiple spatial or temporal scales simultaneously Contents Part I. Thinking About the Material World: 1. Idealizing material response; 2. Continuum mechanics revisited; 3. Quantum and statistical mechanics revisited; Part II. Energetics of Crystalline Solids: 4. Energetic description of cohesion in solids; 5. Thermal and elastic properties of crystals; 6. Structural energies and phase diagrams; Part III. Geometric Structures in Solids: Defects and Microstructure: 7. Point defects in solids; 8. Line defects in solids; 9. Wall defects in solids; 10. Microstructure and its evolution; Part IV. Facing the Multiscale Challenge of Real Material Behavior: 11. Points, lines and walls: defect interactions and material response; 12. Bridging scales: effective theory construction; 13. Universality and specificity in materials.

Langues : Français (fre) Résumé : The theme of this book is an exposition of what we know about the physics underlying the onset of instability in liquid sheets and jets. Epilogue.
