Titre : Path integrals in quantum mechanics, statistics, polymer physics and financial markets Type de document : document imprimé Auteurs : H. Kleinert, Auteur Editeur : Singapore : World Scientific Année de publication : 2003 ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 981-238-107-4 Note générale : Paperback
Langues : Français (fre) Index. décimale : 02.30 Function theory, analysis (differential equations), asymptotic analysis, integration, distributions Résumé : This is the third, significantly expanded edition of the comprehensive textbook published in 1990 on the theory and applications of path integrals. It is the first book to explicitly solve path integrals of a wide variety of nontrivial quantum-mechanical systems, in particular the hydrogen atom. The solutions have become possible by two major advances. The first is a new euclidean path integral formula which increases the restricted range of applicability of Feynman's famous formula to include singular attractive 1/r and 1/r2 potentials. The second is a simple quantum equivalence principle governing the transformation of euclidean path integrals to spaces with curvature and torsion, which leads to time-sliced path integrals that are manifestly invariant under coordinate transformations. In addition to the time-sliced definition, the author gives a perturbative definition of path integrals which makes them invariant under coordinate transformations. A consistent implementation of this property leads to an extension of the theory of generalized functions by defining uniquely integrals over products of distributions. The powerful Feynman–Kleinert variational approach is explained and developed systematically into a variational perturbation theory which, in contrast to ordinary perturbation theory, produces convergent expansions. The convergence is uniform from weak to strong couplings, opening a way to precise approximate evaluations of analytically unsolvable path integrals. Tunneling processes are treated in detail. The results are used to determine the lifetime of supercurrents, the stability of metastable thermodynamic phases, and the large-order behavior of perturbation expansions. A new variational treatment extends the range of validity of previous tunneling theories from large to small barriers. A corresponding extension of large-order perturbation theory also applies now to small orders. Special attention is devoted to path integrals with topological restrictions. These are relevant to the understanding of the statistical properties of elementary particles and the entanglement phenomena in polymer physics and biophysics. The Chern–Simons theory of particles with fractional statistics (anyons) is introduced and applied to explain the fractional quantum Hall effect. The relevance of path integrals to financial markets is discussed, and improvements of the famous Black–Scholes formula for option prices are given which account for the fact that large market fluctuations occur much more frequently than in the commonly used Gaussian distributions. The author's other book on 'Critical Properties of f4 Theories' gives a thorough introduction to the field of critical phenomena and develops new powerful resummation techniques for the extraction of physical results from the divergent perturbation expansions.

Pedersen, Auteur Editeur : Singapore : World Scientific Année de publication : 2004 Collection : Advances in coastal and ocean engineering Importance : IX-339 p. : ill. ; couv. coul. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 981-238-949-0 Note générale : Paperback
Langues : Français (fre) Index. décimale : 92.10 Physical oceanography, sediment transport Résumé : This volume introduces particle image velocimetry (PIV), a technique for water wave measurement in the laboratory and in the open ocean. It discusses the turbulent dissipation, Reynolds stresses and vortical structures in boundary layers of the sea bed, as well as ships, ship wakes, propulsion hydrodynamics, cavitation and free surface waves. Upwelling behind crests of micro-breaking ocean surface waves (important for the exchange of greenhouse gases between air and water) and large amplitude internal solitons in the ocean are measured. The book includes velocities and accelerations in breaking ocean waves, run-up, interaction between strong waves and breakwaters, as well as a concise description of the state-of-the-art PIV technique. This book has its origins in a meeting on PIV and water waves which was held in Cambridge in 2002. The main body of the book consists of six overview or in-depth articles by invited authors who are specialists in their respective fields, as well as practitioners of PIV. A complete set of abstracts from the meeting is enclosed. The book is well suited for scientists who want to acquaint themselves with current experimental hydrodynamics, as well as for researchers and graduate students who are already working in the field or plan to do so. Contents: * Quantitative Imaging Techniques and Their Application to Wavy Flows (J K Sveen & E A Cowen) * PIV Measurements in the Bottom Boundary Layer of the Coastal Ocean (W A M N Smith et al.) * Water Wave Induced Boundary Layer Flows Above a Ripple Bed (P L-F Liu et al.) * Ship Velocity Fields (J Longo et al.) * The Air–Water Interface: Turbulence and Scalar Exchange (S Banerjee & S Maclntyre) * Internal Wave Fields Analyzed by Imaging Velocimetry (J Grue) * Wave Breaking, Surface Motion, Surf Zone, Air–Sea Interaction and Wind Waves * PIV Methods, Boundary Layer Flows and Turbulence * Breakwaters and Internal Waves

Titre : The dynamics of patterns Type de document : document imprimé Auteurs : Mikhail Izrailevich Rabinovich ; A.B. Ezersky, Auteur ; Patrick D. Weidman Editeur : Singapore : World Scientific Année de publication : 2000 ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-981-02-4056-1 Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : Spirals, vortices, crystalline lattices, and other attractive patterns are prevalent in nature. How do such beautiful patterns appear from the initial chaos? What universal dynamical rules are responsible for their formation? What is the dynamical origin of spatial disorder in nonequilibrium media? Based on the many visual experiments in physics, hydrodynamics, chemistry and biology, this study seeks to answer these and related intriguing questions. The mathematical models presented for the dynamical theory of pattern formation are nonlinear partial differential equations. The corresponding theory is not so accessible to a wide audience. Consequently, the authors attempt to synthesise long and complex mathematical calculations to exhibit the underlying physics. The book should be useful to final year undergraduates, but is primarily aimed at graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and others interested in the puzzling phenomena of pattern formation.
