Editeur : Dordrecht, Netherlands : Kluwer Academic Publishers Année de publication : 2004 Collection : Advances in mechanics and mathematics Importance : XII-240 p. : ill. ; 25 cm ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 1-402-07924-9 Note générale : Hardback
Langues : Français (fre) Index. décimale : 68 Surfaces and interfaces Résumé : Convective flow in the liquid phase is always present in a realistic process of freezing and melting and may significantly affect the dynamics and results of the process. The study of the interplay of growth and convection flow during the solidification has been an important subject in the broad fields of materials science, condensed matter physics, fluid physics, micro-gravity science, etc. The present book is concerned with the dynamics of free dendritic growth with convective flow in the melt. It systematically presents the results obtained in terms of a unified asymptotic approach in the framework of the interfacial wave (IFW) theory. In particular, the book explores the effect of the various types of convection flow on the selection and pattern formation of dendritic growth based on the global stability analysis. Audience: Applied mathematicians, physicists, material scientists and engineers will all find this volume of interest.

Despite their diversity, many flows may be theoretically united by means of introducing distributed sinks and/or sources of momentum and heat and mass. Terrestrial vegetation, historically the first example of canopies, creates specific features of turbulence. Aquatic canopies exhibit a range of behaviour depending on the depth of submergence, geometrical forms of the obstacles and the patterns of their relative locations. These and other flows in engineering and environmental situations over surfaces with many obstacles are reviewed in terms of general concepts of fluid mechanics. They have been subject to examination by field-scale and laboratory experiments, and have been modelled and simulated using a variety of computational techniques. Distinct regions of the flows are identified. Application of the flow modelling is also relevant to predicting the dispersion of pollutants in these complex flows, particularly for releases in street canyons and fire propagation. Written by world-recognized experts, the book is of interest to researchers and students in general fluid mechanics and environmental physics, in hydraulics and meteorology, as well as in environment protection.
